This commentary is very persuasive! Japan does not improve as far as there are many Japanese including politicians who may be drowned in weak desire for money and woman. "Puppet” is a usual practice of colonial rule of the British Empire, and Japan is still in such a trap. I do not think that all his words are correct but his viewpoints deserve listening closely. (this video contains many videos in chain so please take care not to listen to see its end!) Japan after the Meiji Restoration greatly had received the influence of the British Empire and it must be it that it is deep, and British merchant, Glover played a big role for the revolution of Meiji.

After Perry’s first visit to Japan, the pressure for opening the country by the big powers such as the U.S., the U.K. and France had been strengthened and the argument of opening or exclusion in Japan came to be severe at an internal trouble state. I pick up some descriptions in the book, "Mirror for Americans; Japan" of Helen Mears about the Japanese trace after opening of country.
“…It made a serious problem in the Tokugawa regime that Perry visited Japan taking four warships to Japan. Two ships of those were the steamships which Japanese had never watched so far. The Japanese shuddered with "surprise and fear".… Perry came back after seven months later taking seven warships.…On March 31, 1885, he let Japan sign a modern treaty for the first time. As a result, the United States came to start to trade with Japan at two ports and could purchase water and coal. Then the U.S. sent a consul to Shimoda, one and a half year later.…The U.K. concluded the same treaty in Octorber, 1885 and it was followed by the Netherlands and Russia in November, 1855 and in February, 1885 respectively.…in 1856, the U.S. sent Townsend Harris as the first consul to Japan. He succeeded in getting the residence and concluding a new treaty (Japan-U.S. sum pro-treaty) that she could trade at three ports from 1857 and concluded an authorized trade agreement for the first time in Japan in the next year. Americans came to be able to live under the law of America at five ports not only by the law of Japan through this treaty. About the trade at these 5 ports, the United States could manage and decide on trade and had only to pay the amount of duty decided in the treaty. Other nations followed to put a "most-favored nation treatment" article in each treaty with Japan and the special privilege which the U.S. obtained through the negotiations with Japan was applied automatically to others.… From 1859, Harris came to live in the legation in Edo as a minister. The U.K., France, the Netherlands and Russia established representatives in Edo without instantaneously. The Great Powers made a way and acted together. When "the right in the treaty" was violated, they dangled the existence of gunboats and if Japan showed an action of dissatisfaction and resistance, they resorted together to the punishment against it.…Japan from this time to the 19th century was, so to speak, a semi-colony. The European and American Great Powers managed all of trade with Japan and decided tax rates and prices and monopolized the coast navigation and their representatives had lived in Japan absorbing Japanese money and being protected in the 99-year lease right and extraterritoriality. The Great Powers submitted the viewpoint of special privileges which led a gay life in their colonies and China to Japan. From then, Japan had been “reformed and re-educated" under the direct "instruction" of the Great Powers for the period, approximately 45 years in Japan.
On the other hand, a Japanese modern historian, Soichi Suzuki pictures the feud among the Shogunate, the Emperor and the Satsuma and Choshu Mito and Tosa feudal clans in the book, “Real nature of the Meiji Restoration". It pictures that facing with the Great Powers, the imperialists the internal troubles came out among the clans regarding the policy on the unification of the imperial and the shogunate and the doctrine of restoring the emperor and expelling the barbarian. And the British behaviors like Japanese Yakuza claiming a vast amount of gold or silver in compensation for their bodily injuries incidents by the Japanese and the wicked powers tried selling weapons and warships through the plots to provoke the internal conflicts among the shogunate and the clans. It is true that the British government and their weapon merchants worked together to rob a vast amount of indemnification money through the wars with Satsuma and Choshu and selling weapons through the internal conflicts among the shogunate and the feudal clans.
As Helen explains, the Meiji Restoration is caused by the plots to provoke with weapons of the U.K. and she moved the Choshu clique government by the fingers in a shade and let them to go to the war in the Mainland China such as the Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War and finally the China Incident. In the background of this revolution Ernest Sato who was a British agent speaking proficient Japanese, played as a fixer. A Britush merchant Glover (Jewish merchant, a subordinate of the Jardine, Matheson firm) used Ryoma Sakamoto as his agent. Takamori Saigou giving the impression as an open minded and daring person in general, defied the advocacy of unifying the Imperial Court and the Shogunate by General Yoshinobu Tokugawa and in place induced a civil war by the plot reminding us of the plots that the U.K. did in Asia including India. This uncomprehending and malicious trace of his actions which ended up with the Southwestern Rebellion at his death. It reminds us a malicious shadow of the U.K. again in his background.
We learned in schools that the Meiji Restoration was caused by the Satsuma and Choshu alliance opposing to the imperialism. However, this is a plot for colonization by the imperialistic nations’ leadership of such as the Britain, the United States and France armed with modern weapons and not such a triumphant revolution as we, the Japanese think. Without mincing matters, Hirobumi Ito, Toshimichi Okubo (of the Satsuma and the Choshu) are their tools and are the leaders of the puppet government which grasped the government by the Meiji Restoration in substitution for the Shogunate. The Emperor Komei (south morning) who objected to their movement died from an illness (assassination!) and the Emperor Mutsuhito in place might be not a descendant of the South but the North Dynasty. All closely resembles the plot of the British Empire did in Asia, traps (the collapse of the revolt of Sepoy → the collapse of the Mogul Empire → the colonization in India and the the Opium War → the occupation of the Chinese coast). A British merchant Glover made a large profit by selling the guns which became stumped by the Civil War in the United States and Ryoma Sakamoto of the Kameyama company might be his agent. As such, the British bad merchants of the wirepuller or the fixers (from the East India Company) did not appear in the history as usual. The story later tells that Japan as a servant of British Empire, sent troops to Korea, Manchuria to prevent an Asian presence of Russia. Russia became the Soviet Union by the Russian Revolution, and China was destined to be similar. The Japan empire interfering them which had a base in Manchuria when it showed the fate (rule structure) of Asia, was finally smashed mercilessly in the way by the Greater East Asia War. In other words, the wicked mafia who made this story in the back of the Britain and the United States government and like in India, in Japan of Asia an unhappy history (colonization) was played.
